Home runs from Wally Joyner, Jim Leyritz, and Ken Caminiti in the 3rd and 4th inning, put the Padres up 8-3 early. Mark Langston unraveled in the 5th, allowing 4 runs to make the score 8-7.

Scott Sanders (1-2) earned his first win as a Padre, pitching a scoreless 2 1/3, with Dan Miceli holding down the 8th and turning over the 1 run lead to Trevor Hoffman. Who closed it out, for his 28th consecutive save of 1998.

1970 ALL STAR GAME -  NATIONAL 5 AMERICAN 4 (12 innings)

Lone Padre representative Cito Gaston went 0 for 2, with a walk. 
Undeniably, the most remembered moment of the game was the final run, scored in the bottom of the twelfth by Pete Rose. The ball was relayed to the American League catcher, Ray Fosse, in time to tag Rose out, but the tenacious Rose bowled Fosse over. Both players were injured, Fosse enough to drop the ball, giving Rose credit for the game-winning run.

Selected Quintin Berry off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies.
  • OF Berry would play at AA San Antonio in 2010. Drafted by the New York Mets in the 2010 rule 5 draft. Made his MLB debut on May 23, 2012 with the Detroit Tigers.
2016

Traded Drew Pomeranz to the Boston Red Sox. Received Anderson Espinoza (minors).
  • P Pomeranz, acquired from the A's via a trade on December 2, 2015, made 17 starts in 2016, posting a 8-7 record with a 2.47 ERA. Signed as a free agent in November 2019 and currently on the 40 man roster.
  • P Espinoza pitched at A level Fort Wayne in 2016 and then left baseball.
