1971

Released Earl Wilson.

• P Wilson, purchased from the Detroit Tigers in July 1970, appeared in 15 games (9 starts) during the 1970 season, posting a 1-6 record with a 4.85 ERA. 

Drafted Dave Hilton in the 1st round (1st pick) of the 1971 amateur draft (January).

• 3B/2B Hilton would make his MLB debut as a Padre on September 10, 1972. Appeared in 161 games over 4 seasons, hitting .213 with 6 HR and 33 RBI. Purchased by the Toronto Blue Jays in October 1976.

Drafted Johnny Grubb in the 1st round (24th pick) of the 1971 amateur draft (January Secondary).

• OF Grubb would make his MLB debut as a Padre on September 10, 1972. Appeared in 513 games over 5 seasons, hitting .286 with 25 HR and 145 RBI. Finished 6th in the 1973 Rookie of The Year award. Selected to the 1974 All-Star game. Traded to the Cleveland Indians in December 1976.
