1971

Purchased John Matias from the Kansas City Royals.

• RF/1B Matias would only appear at the minor league levels until his release after the 1980 season.

1992

Traded Terry Bross to the Texas Rangers. Received Pat Gomez.

• P Bross, acquired from the New York Mets via trade in March 1992, appeared only at AAA Las Vegas during the 1992 season.
• P Gomez would go on to make his MLB debut as a Padre on April 6, 1993. Would appear in 27 games (1 start) during the 1993 season, posting a 1-2 record with a 5.12 ERA. Granted free agency in October 1993.

1996

Traded Willie Blair and Brian Johnson to the Detroit Tigers. Received Cam Smith and Joey Eischen.

• P Blair, signed as a free agent in April 1995, appeared in 100 games (12 starts) over 2 seasons, posting a 9-11 record with a 4.46 ERA including 1 save.
• C Johnson, selected from the New York Yankees in the 1991 minor league draft, made his MLB debut as a Padre on April 5, 1994. Appeared in 186 games over 3 seasons, hitting .260 with 14 HR and 80 RBI.
• P Smith would appear only at AA Mobile during the 1997 season and traded to the Seattle Mariners in March 1998.
• P Eischen would not appear at any level before being traded to the Cincinnati Reds in March 1997.

2002

The St. Louis Cardinals sent Mike Wodnicki to the San Diego Padres to complete the trade of December 15th.

• P Wodnicki would only appear at the minor league levels and be released in 2004. 

Drafted Shane Victorino from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2002 rule 5 draft.

• OF Victorino would go on to make his MLB debut as a Padre on April 2, 2003. Appeared in 36 games during the 2003 season, hitting .151 with 4 RBI. Returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers in May 2003.

Drafted Rico Washington from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2002 rule 5 draft.

• 3B/OF Washington would only appear at the minor league levels before granted free agency in October 2004.

Junior Herndon selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 2002 minor league draft.

• P Herndon, selected by the Padres in the 9th round of the 1997 draft, made his MLB debut as a Padre on August 2, 2001. Appeared in 12 games (8 starts) during the 2001 season, posting a 2-6 record with a 6.33 ERA. 

Signed Mark Loretta as a free agent.

• IF Loretta would go on to appear in 413 games over 3 seasons, hitting .314 with 32 HR and 186 RBI. Selected to 2004 All-Star game. Won a Silver Slugger award in 2004, also finishing 9th in the MVP voting. Traded to the Boston Red Sox in December 2005.
