THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

Game 2 - Astros 5 Padres 4

Andy Ashby struggled through 4 innings, allowing 3 runs, but was rescued by some late offense. Joey Hamilton, pitching in relief for the 8th time in his career, was fantastic, keeping the Padres in the game against Shane Reynolds, finally breaking through with 2 in the 6th to make it a one run game.

Down 3-0 heading to the 6th, and the offense managing only 1 hit so far, finally linked some together. First, Quilvio Veras singled, then scored on a double by Steve Finley. Tony Gwynn followed up with a double of his own to score Finley and suddenly it was a ballgame at 3-2 Houston.

After Hamilton was lifted for a pinch hitter, Donne Wall was rudely greeted by Derek Ball, lofting a ball deep down the left field line to extend the lead to 4-2.

In the top of the 9th, facing Astro's closer Billy Wagner, Ken Caminiti singled with one out to bring up slugger Greg Vaughn. Vaughn would loft a ball to deep center, but easily catchable. With 2 outs, Bruce Bochy called on mid-season acquisition Jim Leyritz, who battled through 7 tough pitches before connecting on a high fastball and launching it into the suddenly stunned crowd, tying the game at 4.

Back-to-back singles brought up a decision for Bochy, who this time turned to the young George Arias, who was overwhelmed by the Wagner fastball, and struck out to end the threat.

Dan Miceli was brought in to extend the games to extra frames, but Ricky Gutierrez singled to lead off and was bunted over to 2nd. Trevor Hoffman was brought in to face Craig Biggio in the dreaded "non-save" situation. Gutierrez stole 3rd on the first pitch. Faced with a runner on 3rd and 1 out, Bochy walked Biggio to face Bill Spiers. On a 1-2 pitch, Spiers lifted a ball just over the head of Quilvio Veras to score Gutierrez for the walk off win.

Series tied at 1, off to San Diego and the massive crowd of Qualcomm. The Padres announced that Kevin Brown will take the ball again, the Astros announced Mike Hampton as their game 3 starter.
