The Cardinals take a commanding 2-0 lead by chasing Padre starter Pedro Astacio after 4 innings. The series heads back to Petco, with the Padres on the brink of elimination.

1984 NLCS GAME 4 - Padres 7 Cubs 5 (Series tied at 2)
The Padres jumped on the board first, scoring 2 in the 3rd inning on sacrifice fly from Tony Gwynn, then a double by Steve Garvey.
The Cubs battled back, on back-to-back home runs from Jody Davis and Leon Durham to take the lead, 3-2.
In the bottom of the 5th, Garvey the hero again, singling home Tim Flannery to tie the game. In the 7th, the Padres reclaim the lead. First up, Garvey, again, singling home Bobby Brown, then Gwynn scoring on a passed ball.
Taking no chances, Dick Williams brought in Goose Gossage to secure the win. The Cubs had other ideas, rallying with 3 hits to score 2 and tie the game back up at 5.
In the bottom of the 9th, Tony Gwynn singles, then Mr. Cub-buster, Steve Garvey forever etched his name in Padre lore with a game winning home run, to tie the series at 2.

Chris Jones granted Free Agency.
- OF Jones, signed as a free agent in 1996, appeared in 92 games during the 1997 season, hitting .243 with 7 HR and 25 RBI.
Jim Bruske selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers off waivers.
- P Bruske, orginally drafted by the Padres in 1985, but did not sign. Signed as a free agent in 1996, appearing in 28 games during the 1997 season. Returned to the Padres in July 1998 via a trade with the Dodgers, and then traded to the New York Yankees in August. Overall his Padre career consisted of 32 games over 2 seasons, posting a 4-1 record with a 3.66 ERA.

- IF Hansen would be released in 2000, without appearing in a single game at any level for the Padres.
