1984 WORLD SERIES - GAME 1 - TIGERS 3 PADRES 2

The Padres first World Series game is at home at Jack Murphy Stadium, and 57,908 fans watched a tense game.

The Tigers opened up with consecutive hits by their dynamic double play combo of Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammel, scoring the games first run.

Dick Williams went out to settle down a clearly over-amped Mark Thurmond, who worked around 2 more hits to keep the damage to 1 run.

In the Padre half of the first, the Padre veterans came through. First Steve Garvey singled, then Craig Nettles did the same, bringing up Terry Kennedy with 2 outs. Kennedy drove one to the wall for a stand up double, bring in both vets for a 2-1 lead.

Detroit starter Jack Morris settled down from there, allowing 5 hits the rest of the way. In the 5th, Larry Herndon would knock one into the stands, scoring Lance Parrish, to take a 3-2 lead.

Morris had it from there, and the Padres couldn't mount any rally to drop the opener.
