1998 SEASON
GAME 4 - PADRES 6 ASTROS 1 (PADRES WIN SERIES 3-1)
Facing ace Randy Johnson once again, the Padres once again prevailed. Sterling Hitchcock outdueled Johnson, pitching a fantastic 6 innings, allowing just one run with 11 strikeouts.
The Padre offense was jumpstarted by the 3rd home run of the series by Jim Leyritz, a booming shot in the second to put the Padres up 1-0.
Hitchcock worked around some trouble in the 4th, almost escaping unscathed, but did allow the tying run on a Jeff Bagwell single.
In the 6th, the Padres put the go-ahead run on the board with the 2 guys who did damage most of the regular season, Greg Vaughn and Ken Caminiti. First, Vaughn double down the 3rd base line for the first hit since the Leyritz home run, then Caminiti hit a ground ball that ate up third baseman Sean Berry, allowing Vaughn to score from second.
Clinging to the one run lead in the 8th, another trade deadline acquisition, John Vander Wal, came up with Tony Gwynn on second and Caminiti on first. Vander Wal blasted the second pitch off the centerfield wall for a bases clearing triple and a 4-1 lead.
Wally Joyner would follow with a home run to right field to raise the lead to 6-1 and 64,898 fans were on their feet, knowing that the Padres are just 3 outs away from advancing to Atlanta to face the Braves.
Despite the large lead, Bruce Bochy does not hesitate to bring in Trevor Hoffman, letting Hells Bells ring throughout the Q. The Astros went down in order, and the Padres advanced to their second National League Championship Series.

GAME OF THE DATE
Game 3 - 1984 NLCS - Padres 7 Cubs 1
Facing elimination, the Padres were inspired by the 58,346 fans wearing their "Cub-Busters" gear, and despite falling behind 1-0 in the second, battled back to win and earn another playoff game.
Ed Whitson, allowing 3 hits in the second to bring in one run, settled down after that - allowing just 2 hits over the next 6 innings. The Padres took their first lead in any game when Garry Templeton doubled to center, scoring Kevin McReynolds and Terry Kennedy. Alan Wiggins would drive home Templeton to extend the lead to 3-1.
In the 6th, a Craig Nettles single would score Tony Gwynn from second, and chase Cubs starter Dennis Eckersley from the game. New pitcher, George Frazier, would allow a single to Kennedy, and then a big 3 run home run to McReynolds to bring the score to 6-1.
Dick Williams wanted nothing to do with a comeback, and brought in Goose Gossage in the 9th to secure the victory, the first ever playoff win in franchise history.
