THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

NLCS Game 6 - Padres 5 Braves 0 (Padres win series 4-2)

With the Braves carrying all the momentum back home after winning consecutive games in San Diego, the Padres faced an uphill task facing Tom Glavine. Sterling Hitchcock got the call for the Padres, and the 2 dueled for 5 innings of scoreless baseball.

In the top of the 6th, the Padres finally broke through. With one out, Greg Vaughn and Ken Caminiti would both single to bring up Jim Leyritz. All he managed was a fielder's choice to third, but it was enough to score Vaughn and give the Padres the lead.

With 2 outs and Caminiti on second, Wally Joyner would single to center, plating Caminiti for a 2-0 lead. Steve Finley would keep the rally alive, singling to left. Chris Gomez would walk on 4 pitches to load the bases for Sterling Hitchcock. Hitchcock would line to left, but Danny Bautista would misplay the ball, allowing Joyner and Finley to score.

Bobby Cox called on John Rocker to put out the fire, but he allowed a single to Quilvio Veras to score Gomez and extend the lead to a massive 5-0 lead.

Spotted a 5 run lead, Hitchcock suddenly ran out of gas, walking Walt Weiss and Gerald Williams to breathe life into the Braves dugout. Bochy, sensing a trip to the World Series is there for the taking, swapped out Hitchcock for Brian Boehringer, who set down the next 3 Braves in order to quell the threat.

In the 7th, Bochy played the matchups, after Boehringer walked Michael Tucker, he brought in Mark Langston to get one out, which he did, then brought in Joey Hamilton to do the same, and he successfully retired Greg Colbrunn to end the inning, and then stayed for the 8th, working around a lead off walk to hand the ball over to Trevor Hoffman in the 9th.

Trevor, in a non-save situation, but knowing that he could secure the series and the NL Pennant, took all of 9 pitches to set down the side in order to win the NLCS!

1984 WORLD SERIES GAME 5 - TIGERS 8 PADRES 4 (DETROIT WINS SERIES 4-1)

The Tigers take Game 5 and become World Series Champions by defeating the Padres 8-4.

Once again, a Padre starter is chased from the game early, this time it was Mark Thurmond, who couldn't get more than 1 out and allowed 3 runs in the first on 5 hits before Dick Williams had seen enough. Andy Hawkins took over, and held the mighty Tigers in check, allowing the Padres a chance.

The Padres rallied for a run in the 3rd on a Steve Garvey single, and added 2 more in the 4th on RBIs from Bobby Brown and Alan Wiggins.

Hawkins walked consecutive batters in the 5th forcing Williams to call on Craig Lefferts, who would walk the bases loaded before a short pop fly scored Kirk Gibson with the go ahead run.

In the 7th, Rich Gossage gave up a home run to Larry Parrish to extend the Tigers lead to 5-3. Kurt Bevacqua would homer in the 8th to bring the Padres back to within 1, but Gossage would let it slip away. Kirk Gibson put an exclamation point on the series, with his 2nd home run of the game, this one a 3 run shot to break open the game, and win 8-4.
