This Date In Padre Baseball - October 17

THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL

1998 SEASON

WORLD SERIES GAME ONE - YANKEES 9 PADRES 6 (YANKEES LEAD 1-0)

Padre starter Kevin Brown got bit once again in the early innings, this time allowing a 2-out double to Ricky Ledee to score 2 and give the Yankees the lead.

Greg Vaughn responded, as he did so many times during the regular season, hitting a ball to deep right field to score Chris Gomez to tie the game.

Still tied at 2 in the 5th inning, the Padres would go back to back against David Wells to take the lead 5-2. First it was Tony Gwynn hitting a 2 out, 2 run homer, then it was Vaughn again, this time a solo shot to deep left.

With the lead still 3 heading to the bottom of the 7th, Kevin Brown got a ground ball out on the first pitch to Scott Brosius before running into some trouble. First Jorge Posada would single, then would walk Ledee on 4 straight pitches. At 106 pitches, Bruce Bochy brought in Donne Wall to face Chuck Knoblauch.

Knoblauch sent Wall's 3rd pitch into the crazed fans at Yankee Stadium to tie the game at 5. Derek Jeter would single, causing Bochy to call to the pen again, this time for Mark Langston.

After getting Paul O'Neill on a pop out, Langston would uncork a wild pitch to advance Jeter. No longer interested in facing Bernie Williams, the Padres intentionally walked him to face Chili Davis. Davis would battle, fouling off 2 pitches and earning a walk to load the bases.

With the bases loaded, Tino Martinez came to the plate. With the count 2-2, Langston threw what he thought was strike 3, as did Martinez and just about everyone in the park, except the one who mattered - Umpire Rich Garcia.

Given a new life, Martinez made the Padres pay, smashing a grand slam into right field bleachers to blow open the game and cap a 7 run inning.

The Padres would claw their way to one run in the 8th, to make the final score 9-6 Yankees.
