1998 SEASON
WORLD SERIES GAME TWO - YANKEES 9 PADRES 3 (YANKEES LEAD 2-0)
In Game 2, the Yankees pounced early and often against Andy Ashby, running him out of the game after 2 2/3 innings and collecting 7 runs to build a lead that El Duque Hernandez would not relinquish.
The wheels fells off early after a Ken Caminti error allowed Chuck Knoblauch to score the games first run in the first. 2 additional unearned runs would score to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead before Yankee Stadium was even completely filled.
Ashby's second inning wasn't any better. Derek Jeter singled in Knoblauch and Bernie Williams would homer to bring in Jeter and extend the lead to 6-0. A double by Ricky Ledee in the 3rd to score Tino Martinez was the last straw for Ashby, and Brian Boehringer was brought in.
The Padres would get on the board in the 5th on a double from Quilvio Veras to score Chris Gomez, but Tony Gwynn would ground out to end the inning at 7-1.
The Yankees did what they so often did in 1998, and responded immediately. This time it was Jorge Posada hitting a 2 run home run to make it 9-1.
In the 8th, the Padres would cobble together a few hits and make the score 9-3, but the rally was never a real threat to the Yankees lead and now have a commanding 2-0 lead in the series heading to San Diego.
