1984

Traded Darren Burroughs (minors) to the Cincinnati Reds. Received Keefe Cato.

• P Burroughs, signed as a free agent in March, appeared only at AAA Las Vegas.
• P Cato would appear only at AAA Las Vegas during the 1985 season. Released after the 1984 season.

1991

Atlee Hammaker granted Free Agency.

• P Hammaker, signed as a free agent in August 1990, appeared in 10 games (2 starts) over 2 seasons, posting a 0-5 record with a 4.88 ERA. 

1996

Bob Tewksbury granted Free Agency.

• P Tewsbury, signed as a free agent in December 1995, appeared in 36 games (33 starts) posting a 10-10 record with a 4.31 ERA.

1997

Carlos Hernandez granted Free Agency.

• C Hernandez, signed as a free agent in December 1996, would re-sign in November and go on to appear in 237 games over 3 seasons, hitting .269 with 14 HR and 91 RBI. Traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in July 2000.

Purchased Daniel Garibay from Mexico City Tigers (Mexican).

• P Garibay would not appear at any level for the Padres, granted free agency in October 1999.

2000

Bret Boone granted Free Agency.

• 2B Boone, acquired from the Atlanta Braves via trade in December 1999, appeared in 127 games during the 2000 season, hitting .251 with 19 HR and 74 RBI.

Tony Gwynn granted Free Agency.

• The great Tony Gwynn is granted free agency for the first time in his career. The Padres would sign him in December to return for his 20th and final season.

Ed Sprague granted Free Agency.

• 1B/3B Sprague, most recently signed as a free agent in August, after previously signing in February. In between he was traded to the Boston Red Sox. Signed again in December and released in March 2001. Appeared in 73 games during the 2000 season, hitting .261 with 10 HR and 27 RBI.

Signed Chris Oxspring as a free agent.

• P Oxspring would go on to make his MLB debut as a Padre on September 2, 2005. Appeared in 5 games during the 2005 season, posting no record with a 3.75 ERA. Released in December 2005.
