THIS DATE IN PADRE BASEBALL
1998 SEASON
NLCS Game 1 - Padres 3 Braves 2 (10 innings)
Andy Ashby and John Smoltz dueled for 7 innings with Smoltz ahead 2-1. Ashby's one mistake was a fastball to Andruw Jones who smashed it down the left field line for a solo home run and a 1-0 lead in the 3rd.
In the 5th inning, Tony Gwynn, batting with 2 on and 2 out, singled sharply to left to score Carlos Hernandez with the tying run.
In the top of the 8th, Ruben Rivera doubles, forcing Smoltz from the game. John Rocker was called on to get Ken Caminiti out, and he did, with a lineout to center, but deep enough for the speedy Rivera to tag and get to third with one out.
Bobby Cox called on the veteran Dennis Martinez to hold the 2-1 lead. He induced a weak ground ball to second from pinch hitter Jim Leyritz, but with Rivera dancing off third, Andres Galaragga pulled his foot off the bad and threw high to home, allowing Rivera to walk in the tying run. The Padres would load the bases, but fail to get another run across against Martinez.
First Randy Myers, and then Dan Miceli couldn't get out of the 8th, forcing Bochy to bring Trevor Hoffman in to get Chipper Jones and preserve the 1 run lead. Hoffman did, with Jones flying out to center to end the threat.
In the 9th inning, Hoffman walked Ryan Klesko, then allowed a single to Javy Lopez sending Klesko to 3rd with one out. Andruw Jones delivered for the Braves with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2.
Closer Kerry Ligtenberg stayed in the game, now in the dreaded "closer in a tie game" situation, and after striking out Ruben Rivera, watched helplessly as Ken Caminiti crushed a ball deep into the Atlanta night for a home run and a 3-2 lead.
Bochy sent Hoffman back out in the 10th to try and seal a stolen Game 1 victory, but after striking out the first 2 hitters, walked pinch hitter Tom Glavine. Donne Wall came on, and walked Chipper Jones causing the raucous Atlanta crowd to go wild. With the Big Cat, Andres Galaragga up, trying to avenge his earlier errors, hit a deep flyball to center, but it was caught at the warning track to give the Padres a 1-0 series lead.

GAME OF THE DATE
1984 NLCS GAME 5 - Padres 6 Cubs 3 (Padres win series 3-2)
Falling being 3-0 in the second, the Padre faithful were restless in the stands. Rick Sutcliffe allowed only 2 hits through 5, and the Cubs were 4 innings away from the World Series.
Following singles from Alan Wiggins and Tony Gwynn, Sutcliffe walked Game 4 hero Steve Garvey to load the bases and make the 58,359 fans go crazy at the Murph. Craig Nettles and Terry Kennedy would both hit sacrifice flys to bring the score to 3-2.
With Carmelo Martinez on first via a base on balls, and one out, Tim Flannery pinch hit for Craig Lefferts, and bounced one towards first baseman Leon Durham, who watched it go right through his legs into right field, scoring Martinez to tie the game.
With the Murph still rocking, Wiggins would single, moving Flannery to second to bring up Tony Gwynn. On a 0-1 pitch, Gwynn doubled to center field, scoring both runners to take the lead 5-3. Garvey would single home Gwynn to bring the score to 6-3.
Goose Gossage would pitch a scoreless 8th and 9th to send the San Diego Padres to their first World Series in franchise history.
