Signed Jerry Johnson as a free agent.

• P Johnson would go on to appear in 45 games (5 starts) over 2 seasons, posting a 4-4 record with a 5.23 ERA. Traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in February 1977.

2010

Signed Josh Barfield as a free agent.

• 2B Barfield returns to San Diego, but only appears at AAA Portland during the 2010 season. Originally selected by the Padres in the 4th round of the 2001 draft, he made his MLB debut as a Padre on April 3, 2006. Appeared in 150 games during the 2006 season, hitting .280 with 13 HR and 58 RBI. Traded to the Cleveland Indians in November 2006.
