Signed Mickey Lolich as a free agent.
- P Lolich would go on to appear in 47 games (7 starts) over 2 seasons, posting a 2-3 record with a 3.43 ERA including 1 save. Released in October 1979.
1999
Traded Mark Sweeney and Greg Vaughn to the Cincinnati Reds. Received Josh Harris, Damian Jackson and Reggie Sanders.
- OF/1B Sweeney, acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals via trade in June 1997, would return for 2 more stints (2002,2005) and appear in a total of 376 games over 4 seasons, hitting .265 with 13 HR and 78 RBI.
- LF Vaughn, acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers via trade in July 1996, appeared in 321 games over 3 seasons, hitting .245 with 78 HR and 198 RBI. All Star selection in 1998 and finished 4th in MVP voting in 1998.
