The Cincinnati Reds sent Ray Brown to the San Diego Padres to complete the trade of March 15.

• 1B/LF Brown would go on to appear only at the minor league levels during the 1997 season. Released in November.

1999

Signed Jose Mercedes as a free agent.

• P Mercedes would go on to appear only at AAA Las Vegas during the 1999 season. Released in June.

2001

Signed Rickey Henderson as a free agent.

• OF Henderson returns to San Diego for the 2001 season, appearing in 123 games, stealing 25 bases at age 42. Granted free agency in November. Overall, appeared in 359 games over 3 seasons, hitting .245 with 23 HR and 98 RBI.

Traded Mark Phillips, Bubba Trammell and cash to the New York Yankees. Received Rondell White.

• OF Trammell, acquired from the New York Mets via trade in December 2000, appeared in 275 games over 2 seasons, hitting .253 with 42 HR and 148 RBI.
